PCI DSS

About

The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) is a set of security standards designed to ensure that all companies that accept, process, store, or transmit credit card information maintain a secure environment. PCI DSS was developed to enhance cardholder data security and facilitate the broad adoption of consistent data security measures globally.

History and Background

  • Establishment: PCI DSS was established by the PCI Security Standards Council (PCI SSC) in 2006. The PCI SSC was formed by major credit card companies including Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, and JCB.

  • Purpose: The primary goal of PCI DSS is to protect cardholder data from breaches and fraud by standardizing security measures across all entities involved in payment card transactions.

PCI DSS Structure and Requirements

PCI DSS is organized into six control objectives, which are further divided into 12 requirements. Each requirement includes specific sub-requirements detailing the necessary security measures.

  1. Build and Maintain a Secure Network and Systems

    • Requirement 1: Install and maintain a firewall configuration to protect cardholder data.

      • Ensure proper configuration and maintenance of firewalls.

      • Implement rules that deny all traffic from untrusted networks.

    • Requirement 2: Do not use vendor-supplied defaults for system passwords and other security parameters.

      • Change default passwords and settings before installing new systems.

      • Develop configuration standards for all system components.

  2. Protect Cardholder Data

    • Requirement 3: Protect stored cardholder data.

      • Use strong cryptography to protect stored data.

      • Limit data retention and securely delete unnecessary data.

    • Requirement 4: Encrypt transmission of cardholder data across open, public networks.

      • Use encryption technologies such as SSL/TLS to protect data in transit.

      • Ensure encryption keys are properly managed and stored.

  3. Maintain a Vulnerability Management Program

    • Requirement 5: Protect all systems against malware and regularly update anti-virus software or programs.

      • Deploy anti-virus software on all systems commonly affected by malware.

      • Ensure anti-virus programs are capable of generating audit logs.

    • Requirement 6: Develop and maintain secure systems and applications.

      • Establish a process to identify and address security vulnerabilities.

      • Implement security patches and updates in a timely manner.

  4. Implement Strong Access Control Measures

    • Requirement 7: Restrict access to cardholder data by business need to know.

      • Implement access control mechanisms to limit access based on job responsibilities.

      • Ensure that access rights are granted based on necessity.

    • Requirement 8: Identify and authenticate access to system components.

      • Assign a unique ID to each person with computer access.

      • Use strong authentication methods (e.g., multi-factor authentication).

    • Requirement 9: Restrict physical access to cardholder data.

      • Implement physical security controls to limit access to cardholder data.

      • Ensure proper disposal of media containing cardholder data.

  5. Regularly Monitor and Test Networks

    • Requirement 10: Track and monitor all access to network resources and cardholder data.

      • Implement logging mechanisms to track access to data and system components.

      • Regularly review logs for suspicious activity.

    • Requirement 11: Regularly test security systems and processes.

      • Conduct regular vulnerability scans and penetration tests.

      • Ensure wireless access points are tested for vulnerabilities.

  6. Maintain an Information Security Policy

    • Requirement 12: Maintain a policy that addresses information security for employees and contractors.

      • Develop and maintain a security policy that is reviewed and updated regularly.

      • Provide security awareness training to all personnel.

Compliance Levels and Validation

PCI DSS compliance is categorized into four levels based on the volume of transactions processed by a merchant annually. Each level has different requirements for validation and reporting.

  1. Level 1:

    • Merchants processing over 6 million transactions annually.

    • Required to undergo an annual on-site assessment conducted by a Qualified Security Assessor (QSA) or an internal auditor if signed by an officer of the company.

  2. Level 2:

    • Merchants processing 1 to 6 million transactions annually.
