About
Git is a distributed version control system (DVCS) designed to handle everything from small to very large projects with speed and efficiency. It allows multiple developers to work on the same codebase without overwriting each other’s changes. Every change to the code is tracked over time, giving us the ability to go back to previous versions, compare differences, collaborate seamlessly, and maintain a clean history of progress.
Originally created by Linus Torvalds for Linux kernel development, Git has become the de facto standard for version control in both open-source and enterprise software development.
Git is not a hosting platform (like GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket); it's the engine under the hood that powers them. The key concept is that every developer has a full copy of the project history, which enables offline work, faster operations, and more flexibility.
Git as a time machine for our code
