Encryption & Decryption

About

Encryption is the process of converting plain text into ciphertext, making it unreadable to unauthorized parties. Decryption is the reverse process, transforming ciphertext back into its original plain text. The primary goal of encryption and decryption is to ensure data confidentiality and security, preventing unauthorized access to sensitive information.

Types of Encryption

1. Symmetric Encryption:

  • Uses a single key for both encryption and decryption.

  • Common algorithms: Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), Data Encryption Standard (DES), Triple DES (3DES).

  • Advantages: Fast and efficient.

  • Disadvantages: Key distribution and management challenges.

2. Asymmetric Encryption:

  • Uses a pair of keys: a public key for encryption and a private key for decryption.

  • Common algorithms: RSA (Rivest-Shamir-Adleman), ECC (Elliptic Curve Cryptography).

  • Advantages: Enhanced security and easier key management.

  • Disadvantages: Slower performance compared to symmetric encryption.

Real-World Use Cases

  1. Secure Communications:

    • Encryption is essential for secure email communication, ensuring that only the intended recipient can read the message. Protocols like S/MIME (Secure/Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) and PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) are commonly used.

    • Instant messaging apps like WhatsApp and Signal use end-to-end encryption to protect user conversations from eavesdropping.

  2. Data Storage:

    • Encrypting data at rest protects sensitive information stored on devices and servers. Full disk encryption (FDE) tools like BitLocker and FileVault are used to secure data on laptops and mobile devices.

    • Cloud storage providers use encryption to safeguard data stored on their servers, ensuring that only authorized users can access the information.

  3. Financial Transactions:
