Modes of Operation

About

Modes of operation are techniques that allow the repeated and secure use of a block cipher's underlying encryption algorithm to encrypt data larger than a single block. These modes ensure that patterns in plaintext do not appear in ciphertext, enhancing the security of the encryption process. Modes of operation are primarily applicable to symmetric encryption algorithms, not asymmetric ones.

What are Block Ciphers?

  • Block ciphers are algorithms that operate on fixed-sized blocks of data (e.g., 128 bits for AES - Advanced Encryption Standard).

  • They take a plain text block (unencrypted data) and a secret key as input, and produce a ciphertext block (encrypted data) as output.

  • The decryption process reverses this, taking the ciphertext block and the same secret key to recover the original plain text.

Key Characteristics:

  • Symmetric Key Cryptography: Block ciphers use a single secret key for both encryption and decryption. Both parties involved in communication must share this key securely.

  • Deterministic: Given the same plain text and secret key, a block cipher always produces the same ciphertext block.

Imagine if we have a document and want to encrypt with a secret key. Here's how block ciphers work:

  1. Chunking the Document:

    • Block ciphers can't handle the entire document at once. They work on smaller, fixed-sized pieces of data called "blocks." Think of it like chopping the document into equal-sized chunks.

    • The block size is a characteristic of the specific block cipher algorithm (e.g., AES uses 128-bit blocks).

  2. Encryption Process:

    • Each block of our document goes through a complex mathematical transformation using the secret key. This transformation scrambles the data, making it unreadable without the key.

    • It's like having a special lock (the block cipher) that requires a specific key (the secret key) to scramble the contents of each page (the data block) in your document.

  3. Output - Ciphertext:

    • After processing each block, the block cipher produces a new block of data called "ciphertext." This ciphertext is a seemingly random collection of bits that doesn't resemble the original content.

  4. Decryption Process (Similar but Reversed):

    • When someone wants to decrypt the message, they need the same secret key.

    • The decryption process uses the secret key to reverse the transformation on each ciphertext block, recovering the original plain text content.

Why Modes of Operation?

  1. Block Size Limitation: Block ciphers operate on fixed-size blocks of data (e.g., 128 bits for AES). Modes of operation enable the encryption of data larger than this fixed block size.

  2. Security Enhancement: They help prevent certain types of cryptographic attacks by introducing randomness and ensuring that identical plaintext blocks do not result in identical ciphertext blocks.

Common Modes of Operation

1. Electronic Codebook (ECB)

  • Description: Encrypts each block of plaintext independently using the block cipher. With ECB mode, we break the plaintext into N bit segments, and send each one through the block cipher separately. The block cipher is deterministic, and so if two plaintext blocks happen to be the same, so will the corresponding ciphertext blocks.

  • Advantages: Simple and parallelizable.

  • Disadvantages: Identical plaintext blocks result in identical ciphertext blocks, revealing patterns and making it insecure for most applications.

  • Usage: Rarely used in practice due to its security weaknesses.

2. Cipher Block Chaining (CBC)

  • Description: Each plaintext block is XORed with the previous ciphertext block before being encrypted.

  • Initialization Vector (IV): A random IV is used for the first block to ensure different ciphertexts for identical plaintexts.

  • Advantages: More secure than ECB; patterns are not revealed.

  • Disadvantages: Encryption is sequential, making parallelization difficult.

  • Usage: Commonly used in file encryption and data transmission.

3. Cipher Feedback (CFB)
